About the Project

This project has been selected for consideration for a fully-funded Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship at Nottingham Trent University. Smart and interactive textiles (SMIT) are an exciting new area of research where electronic functionality is introduced into textiles. Nottingham Trent University is taking the lead in this research and has developed technologies for integrating semi-conductor chips into yarns without affecting the desired textile characteristics of flexibility, conformability and softness. Smart and Interactive textiles could potentially be used for a large number of applications such as body monitoring for medical applications, RFID tagging and performance monitoring in sports. There has been a recent upsurge in SMITs on the market and economic growth in the area is predicted to be 40% annually. The long-term vision of the Advanced Textiles Research Group (ATRG) at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is to manufacture electronic functionality into textiles that can be subjected to machine washing and tumble drying. The ATRG has produced prototype yarns, fabrics and garments incorporating light-emitting diode (LED) chips. However, the group now plans to develop an automated manufacturing system for embedding very small semi-conductor chip (~500µm) into yarn at a rate of three devices per minute. This would lead to the development of a basic manufacturing system for the production of the next generation of smart and interactive textiles or perhaps the next generation of electronics. The student will develop automated procedures for ensuring electrical connectivity, protecting the semi-conductor chips and producing the yarn. The yarns will then be made into fabrics that will be tested for electronic functionality both before and after machine washing and tumble drying. By way of a demonstrator, the student will produce yarns and fabrics with integrated temperature, humidity and pressure sensors for medical and sports applications. We would particularly like to recruit a student with a background in electronics. Entry requirements

In order to be eligible to apply, you must hold, or expect to obtain by 1st October 2015, a Master’s degree, or a 1stClass/2.1 Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (including, where appropriate, training in the relevant research methods and, where relevant, laboratory experience).

Applications can be accepted from UK/EU and International students, but a successful non-EU candidate would be responsible for paying the difference between non-EU and UK/EU fees. (Full-time Fees for 2014/15 are £12,000 for non-EU students and £3,996 for UK/EU students) . The minimum English language proficiency requirement for candidates who have not undertaken a higher degree at a UK HE institution is IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in all skills)


Funding Notes

The scholarships will pay UK/EU fees (currently set at £3996 for 2014/15 and are revised annually) and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (this is revised annually and is currently £13,863 for academic year 2014/15) for up to three years*. The scholarships are due to commence in October 2015.
