The energy data exchange between different energy management systems (EMS) levels needs to take place in a secured and reliable manner to ensure the effectiveness of energy management mechanism, as well as the safety of the physical power grid. The energy management operation in a microgrid can be significantly affected due to potential privacy and integrity threats at different EMS levels.
Thus, the microgrid security mechanisms need to be embedded in the EMSs to secure the energy as well as pricing data from being hacked and corrupted by unauthorized malicious entities. In the microgrid EMS structure, unauthorized users can eavesdrop the energy generation, consumption and pricing data and later on, intentionally manipulate these data to break the supply-demand balance in the local energy market within the microgrid, and eventually create instabilities in the system. When the wireless transmitters at the EMSs forward energy consumption and generation, as well as pricing data to the next levels, eavesdroppers can overhear these transmissions and with their increasing computation power, they can decode this information. Access to the pricing and energy information enables the attackers to compromise the integrity of the energy management operation.
The project’s innovations and contributions to knowledge will be evaluated through a number of demonstrator test beds in the UK and Australia.

The proposed project aims to develop a security-constrained transactive energy trading mechanism, by addressing the following:
- Developing a framework for integration of a microgrid security framework to ensure the security-constrained energy transactions in microgrids.
- Development of an energy trading mechanism among neighbors as well as with the grid in residential microgrids using a game theoretic approach.
- Investigating the impact of information manipulations or cyber-attacks on the transactive energy market.
Successful applicants will have:
• A minimum of a 2:1 first degree (second class honours upper division) in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 70% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 70% overall module average, and/or
• A Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at 70%. In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at 70%.
• Preference will be given to applicants with a H1 or Maters degree
• The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a prescribed period of study
• Language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).
