Development of a workplace muscle and bone strengthening intervention to improve mental health and well being in employees

Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport

About the Project

Mental ill-health affects 1 in 6 of the workforce in the UK and is the leading cause of sickness absence, presenteeism and staff turnover, costing employers £2.15 billion/year. Physical activity has been shown to be important in improving and preventing mental ill-health. However, research has typically focused on cardiovascular activity with workplace interventions to address muscle and bone strengthening and balance activities (MBSBA) for mental health lacking. There is limited evidence on best approaches to increase MBSBA in the workplace with a need to investigate what MBSBA could improve mental health in the workplace and employees and workplaces views on this sort of intervention. This project will involve a systematic review of the literature, conducting focus groups and workshops and developing and testing an intervention. This research could help inform future work into strategies to improve mental health in the workplace.
