About the Project

Applicants are invited for interdisciplinary PhD position at the University of Surrey, as follows:

Project Title: Development of an ultra-flexible, wireless and battery free mesh-device for cardiac rhythm monitoring and stimulation.

Project Description: Enabling the stimulation of human cells, including cardiac and neuronal cells, with a bio‐ compatible device, without wires, on ultra‐flexible substrates, is of paramount importance for future bio‐medical devices. This project will explore growth, and direct excitation of cells in vitro, with optically – excited, novel organic semiconductor devices interfaces, by incorporating them onto soft substrates, and specifically looking at cells’ response and excitation transduction when exposed to localised stimuli. Light pulses, with optical wavelengths that have least absorption in human tissues, will serve both as an excitation and power source for the electronic device. Ultra‐ flexible, and also stretchable nature of the electronic part is the key to the future tissue scaffolding for natural cardiac tissue which is exposed to a constant mechanical stress and strain. An advanced bio‐medical device in combination with in vitro cardiovascular model for drug testing will be suggested as the outcome of this project.

Applicant Specifications: First class undergraduate or masters degree and very strong background in either of the disciplines: veterinary medicine, cardiovascular science, biomedical engineering, materials, bio‐ physics excellent practical and analytical skills deep interest and demonstrated excellent aptitude for interdisciplinary research

A 3.5-year fully funded studentship open to applicants worldwide starting in October 2022. Funding includes stipend, full fees and a research grant.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (upper second) in an appropriate discipline, but prior experience in research or industry may be acceptable.

English language requirements: An IELTS Academic of 6.5 or above with 6 in each individual category (or equivalent qualification from other agencies).
