Development of Durable E-textiles for Healthcare Applications using Direct-Write Patterning and Electroless Copper Plating

Centre for Manufacturing and Materials Engineering

Monday, October 31, 2022  Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a (fully-funded) PhD studentship as part of the A*Star (Singapore) ARAP scheme. The successful candidate will enrol at Coventry University, UK as their home institution and will spend up to 2 years at I2R of A*STAR.

In recent years, there has been a huge advancement in electronic textiles (e-textiles), which enable the integration of electronics into fabrics to develop wearable electronics. The added functionality resulted from this integration can be beneficial to a wide range of applications such as medical and healthcare. Currently, most of the e-textiles are fabricated by coating the textiles with conductive inks, however, in some cases this can make the e-textiles stiff and non-breathable with limited washing durability due to the poor adhesion of the coatings to the textile substrates. Therefore, the challenges are to improve the comfort and durability of the e-textiles whilst maintaining excellent electronic performance for wide adoption of this emerging technology in the applications such as healthcare and wellness monitoring.

  • It is essential that applicants have a background in chemistry/materials science preferably surface and coating technologies.
  • It would be desirable if the applicants had expertise and practical experience in electroless plating and/or direct-write patterning, and surface characterisation methods.
  • Analytical thinking
  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate the experience of safe working practises in a chemical laboratory.
  • Good communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • Excellent team skills and able to work in a multi-cultural research group.
  • Applicants with publications will be highly regarded.

Entry criteria for applicants to PHD

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.

  • the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a 3.5 years
  • a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)
  • Language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).
  • All applications require full supporting documentation, CV, a covering letter, plus a 2000-word supporting statement showing how the applicant’s expertise and interests are relevant to the project.
