Recent research work at the University of Salford has focussed upon enhancing the mechanical properties of concrete materials using graphene products. This project aims to expand upon the early work and promising results of these studies.
Dispersion of graphene products in aqueous solutions is a problem which we have successfully resolved using a two-phase dispersion process which has led to consistent behavioural properties in both cementitious composites and concrete products. Your future project will use this technique to produce a graphene solution to incorporate into concrete specimens, with the graphene solution having varying percentage concentrations of graphene. You will further explore incorporating different combinations of materials within the graphene concrete mixes, in particular waste products to improve the environmental credentials of concrete and embrace circular economy principles. Based upon your results, you will also develop suitable mix design models for predicting strength and other properties to impact upon current practice.
Predominately laboratory focussed there will be some element of computer modelling and data analysis to this project. You will be based within the civil engineering facilities (https://www.salford.ac.uk/our-facilities/civil-engineering-labs) and the Graphene hub.
