The recent need to replace fossil fuels with alternative energy sources is motivating the scientific research to develop new “smart materials” that can be used either for the production of “green fuels” or to convert renewable energy sources (for example sunlight) into electricity.
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have been shown as promising materials for low-cost and high efficiency solar cells and LED devices thanks to their unique properties as well as simple and safe solution phase syntheses. Also, the optical properties of colloidal NCs can be finely tuned to match the required standards, and the NCs, in the form of inks (i.e. dispersion of NCs in a desired solvent) can be readily employed in low cost ink-jet processes for the fabrication of devices.
This research activity will be first focused in the synthesis of nanocrystals, including for example metal halide perovskites, metal chalcogenides, pnictides and chalcohalides. Such materials will be engineered in order to optimize their optical and electrical properties. Possible strategies include the doping of NCs with transition metal cations or the formation of alloyed NC structures via direct synthesis or ion exchange procedures. Also, will be paid great attention to the characterization of the surface of colloidal NCs.
Requirements: The ideal candidate must have a Master Degree in one of the following areas: Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Physics.

Perovskite and perovskite-related nanocrystals are attractive materials for optoelectronics due to their bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence, and high defect tolerance. Heterostructured nanocrystals, including core/shell and Janus nanocrystals, offer the opportunity to optimize/alter the optoelectronic properties and the stability of the nanocrystals. The PhD candidate will work on the development of perovskite-based heterostructured nanocrystals with the aim of accessing new features beyond what the individual components can offer. The structural, morphological, and photophysical properties of these heterostructures will be studied in detail, and they will then be tested for optoelectronic applications in light emitting diodes, and in concentrators for solar cells.
The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in one of the following areas: Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or equivalent.
