The University of Exeter and Hunter Stoves Ltd are seeking a top class electronic engineer to undertake research leading to the award of an International Engineering Doctorate, awarded jointly by the Universities of Exeter, Warwick and Cranfield.
The University of Exeter are working in collaboration with Hunter Stoves Group, a leading UK manufacturer of domestic heating products, on a range of new clean and sustainable heating products. With one EngD project in place we are making fast progress towards revolutionary changes in gas and particulate emissions from domestic heating. Building on the recent changes in UK regulations regarding gas heating, this project aims to develop better electric heating products to take advantage of the increasing supply of electricity generated from renewable sources.
Electric stoves are easy to run at the flick of a switch giving the customer instant heat with no mess. However take up of electric stoves in the UK has been hampered by their poor image and sometimes low quality. This project aims to develop an enhanced electric stove that will be acceptable for a wider portion of the UK fire market. To do this we will develop a much better visual, auditory and olfactory experience for customers. The products will integrate into whatever Home Network or Internet of Things architecture is appropriate at the time of launch. The successful candidate will ideally have some good experience in electronic design and construction for products. As a ‘research engineer’ on our International Doctorate programme you will have unrivalled access to some of the best teaching and industrial expertise in the world, across three universities. While you will be based at Exeter and Hunter Stoves Ltd, you will also spend time at Warwick and Cranfield Universities to give you the broadest possible experience. You will emerge from the four-year programme with high level skills uniquely suited to industry.
Hunter Stoves Ltd produces a range of high end wood-burning and other stoves for the consumer market. They have 30 years’ experience in manufacturing and wish to develop smart electric fires for their next generation of stoves. Working alongside an experienced R&D team at Hunter Stoves Ltd, you will lead the work on i) mechanical and electrical designs of the LED array and rotational spindle of cut outs, ii) investigating fire displacement by LCD and its 3D effect enhancement by reflection structure, iii) wireless interface and APP development to communicate with smart home system, and iv) developing functions of burning wood sound and smell.
This award provides annual funding to cover UK/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend. For students who pay UK/EU tuition fees the award will cover the tuition fees in full, plus at least £20,509 per year tax-free stipend.
