Development of portable capillary electrophoresis instrumentation for medical diagnostic purposes

Project Description

Clinical diagnostics of selected diseases requires analysis of multicomponent mixtures of analytes that is often difficult to accomplish by conventional methods approved for clinical practice. The use of more sophisticated techniques such as HPLC is however restricted to biochemical laboratories, because the instruments are not portable and require significant expertize. Capillary electrophoresis is a separation technique that can be easily made portable, as it does not use instrument parts that need the mains power. Additionally, for capillary electrophoresis, numerous open source literature resources are available, making it possible to construct a fully open source, microcontroller controlled CE instrument that can be used for fully automated analysis and even data evaluation of the results. In this Ph.D. topic a microcomputer operated, portable capillary electrophoresis instrument will be developed with various detection schemes (UV, C4D, LIF) with a major emphasis on simple operation, automation and possibly automated data analysis. The developed instrument will be used in various tasks related to clinical diagnosis in cooperation with the faculty hospital in Brno.
