Short electron bunches with durations in the femtosecond regime are sought after in a growing number of applications. For example, accelerator-driven X-ray sources like the EuXFEL require them to produce comparatively short light flashes. The current state-of-the-art diagnostic methods for such short bunches, based on radio-frequency deflecting structures, reach the required time resolution. However, they are high in cost and destructive for the electron bunches, preventing them to provide a live characterization of the bunches during operation.

DESY is developing novel charged particle beam diagnostics at the dedicated accelerator research and development facility ARES, and is looking for a PhD student to join this effort within the team running the radio frequency linear accelerator ARES. The main topic will be the development of a non-destructive dielectric structure-based charged particle beam diagnostic from simulation to device design to the proof-of-principle experiment at ARES. This will be complemented by operation and further development of the ARES linac. This research will be conducted in a very collaborative environment with SLAC, Stanford University, UCLA, FAU Erlangen and PSI already working together on experiments at the ARES linac.

About your role:

  • Simulation of charged particle beam interaction with dielectric micro-structures
  • Development of a prototype design
  • Planning and running of proof-of-principle experiment
  • Participation in the operation of ARES linac
  • Software development for machine control and data analysis
  • Participation in the on-going dielectric laser acceleration experiments

About you:

  • Master's degree / Diplom in physics, electrical engineering or related field or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in electromagnetic field simulations
  • Knowledge of programming languages (esp. Python, C++)
  • Good understanding of electromagnetics, optics
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Working in a team
  • Experience with ultra-short infrared lasers is a plus
  • Experience with electron linacs is a plus
