About the Project

Offshore structures whether oil and gas strength and fatigue life expectancy. A typical offshore structure is made up from a variety of materials and joints thus many challenges are associated with these structures due to various wind and waves loads.

The aim of this research is to develop a fully automated comprehensive computational framework that can be employed to establish the soundness of the structural integrity of an offshore structure and establish the fatigue life. The research will establish an integrated multibody finite element model of offshore structures in an oil & gas or renewable energy facility and will develop wind and wave-induced response model of topside structures with different speeds and directions based on real metocean data of North Sea environment.

There will be an offline digital twin coupling by comparison with the existing field test data after establishing a verification methodology to determine the accuracy of the proposed response facilities or renewable energy systems withstand severe environmental conditions that challenge the limits of their model. Further to extreme loads the impact of low stress range on the fatigue damage due to various loadings will also be investigated aiming to utilise the twin data for improved “best in class” prediction of fatigue performance of the offshore structure.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. The successful candidate should have, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Civil or Offshore Engineering or other related engineering disciplines or applied physics. Candidates should have the experience of CAD and finite-element-based modelling and computer programming skills for data analysis and be willing to learn machine learning techniques.
