Parkinson’s disease is the world’s fastest-growing neurological condition. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes a wide range of movement-related problems and NHS services are struggling to meet the demand for care. Working collaboratively with patients and community teams, we have developed a new pathway to reduce the burden on healthcare services through digital tools to create a more efficient Parkinson’s care pathway, Home Based Care. We have won funding from NHSX to deliver the rapid scale-up and deployment of complementary digital tools to support Parkinson’s care and self-management in the home, which will then be suitable for uptake across the NHS.
This project will centre on the design, development and deployment of this digital pathway and provides an opportunity for candidates with either an engineering background to develop artificial intelligence patient engagement software or candidates with a non-technical background the opportunity to conduct research in product development and implementation of such digital health solutions with clinical medicine. You will explore the barriers and solutions to implementation and adoption within the NHS, at the level of patients, clinical care teams and healthcare organisations. A particular focus will be alignment with NHS England’s strategy for reducing healthcare inequalities.
Eligibility
Applicants should have a first or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate subject and preferably a relevant Masters qualification.
The studentship is supported for 3 years and includes full Home tuition fees plus a stipend of £16,062 per annum (2022/23 rate). The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home fees with relevant qualifications. Applicants normally required to cover International fees will have to cover the difference between the Home and the International tuition fee rates (approximately £12,697 per annum).
