About the Project

Although cancer therapeutics, mainly chemotherapy and radiotherapy, have been extremely useful in the treatment of cancer, this disease is still associated with high mortality. With the aim of discovering new treatments for cancer, this PhD project will focus on the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of small synthetic molecules that manipulate the immune system to eliminate cancer cells. This project will benefit from some immunotherapeutic small molecules that we recently discovered and which will form the basis for the work of the PhD project.

From working on this project, the PhD candidate will learn the synthesis, purification and characterisation of small molecules, drug design and development as well as assay development for testing the biological activities of synthetic molecules. Such knowledge will be extremely valuable for those wishing to pursue a career in academia or with pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies.

The work will be based at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Cardiff University, UK. Contact Dr. Youcef Mehellou ([Email Address Removed]) for informal inquiries.
