About This PhD Project

Project Description

The Sheffield group leads European participate in the search for a galactic particle dark matter signals using the so-called annual modulation signal with the DM-ICE experiment 2.5 km below the South Pole. Sheffield built the two NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors now running in the DM-ICE17 experiment beneath the ice at the South Pole. Topics for the project including one or more of the following: analysis of data from the 17 kg prototype scintillator now running in the ice to search for a dark matter annual modulation signal; development and test of the new 250 kg ultra-low background detector being built for deployment at the South Pole; development and test of new sodium iodide crystals for the detector now being installed at the UK’s Boulby underground site; possibility to participate in deployment activities at the Antarctic South Pole and possibly Australia.
