DTC CS 13 -Fast DNA alignment algorithms for mainstream DNA analysis

  • Full or part time
  • Application Deadline
    Applications accepted all year round
  • Self-Funded PhD Students Only
    Self-Funded PhD Students Only

Project Description

Alignment of DNA sequences has had a profound impact on health science – e.g. cancer genome sequencing for targeted therapy or identification of genetic disorders – but is still unfortunately very costly due to the huge amount of processing power needed. This is mainly due to the complexity of the alignment algorithms used for solving the problem.

The Fellowship will offer the opportunity to work on a new family of algorithms that are several orders of magnitude faster that current technologies and allow DNA analysis to become mainstream in the health sector as well as in other sciences.

Entry requirements

Candidates must have a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, or an appropriate Master’s degree (with Merit). Informal enquiries are welcome by emailing the project supervisor.

For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests. We prefer candidates to have already met the English Language requirements at the point of application, although this is not a requirement.
