Durability analysis in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles


Project Description

In this project , the heavy duty hybrid electric vehicles is considered for the investigation. The propulsion in these trucks is based on parallel operation of a bank of lithium batteries and series of hydrogen fuel cells. During acceleration, or uphill driving, both the FC and the battery provide power to the traction motor. The battery speeds up the vehicle’s response time for a request of acceleration, because the FC typically has a slow response time. This also allows the FC to maintain a safe and efficient operating point.

Subsequent demands for acceleration and uphill climbing increases the Depth Of Discharge (DOD) and reduces the battery lifetime thereby. It is required that for optimal power management part of the load increase be allocated to FC. This results temperature rise in the FC stack and performance and lifetime decreasing in propulsion sources.

The main objective of the research is simultaneous transient heat transfer in FC with the DOD history analysis in the batteries enabling an integrated power management to be implemented. The multi objective optimisation techniques will be used to assist the calibration of the unidirectional DC/DC converter for the FC and bidirectional DC/DC converter for lithium batteries . The outcomes of the research will provide straightforward guidelines for critical assessment of the existing power management systems in heavy duty hybrid electric vehicles.

Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) a UK honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Mechanical , Chemical or Electrical Engineering.

Essential background: An Engineering or Applied physics background that is related to renewable energy is required along with
knowledge in modelling and simulation and fluency in one programming language like MATLAB, etc.
