Project description

Electronic textiles, or e-textiles, refers to the addition of electronics, sensors, actuators, energy harvesters and energy storage within fabric materials. Being the most common material humans come into physical contact with, e-textiles provide a ubiquitous platform for a new class of wearable technology where the electronics are hidden and undetectable within otherwise standard items of clothing. Textiles are also used in industry, agriculture, civil engineering, the marine environment, transport and medicine; hence, the potential applications for the technology are vast.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (UK fees and International) to work on triboelectric energy harvesting within garments. This would involve investigating the use of the triboelectric effect to generate electrical energy from motion and the incorporation of a triboelectric device within a garment. Textiles are very well suited to this application and the PhD would also involve efficiently capturing this energy and demonstrating its use in powering a small wireless sensing system. Candidates should have good electronics expertise and a willingness to collaborate with textile engineers.

Successful candidates will be highly motivated and willing to work co-operatively within an exceptional and vibrant team of postdoctoral researchers and other PhD students. You will join the School of Electronics and Computer Science which is ranked 1st in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2022) within the University of Southampton which is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide. We will provide access to specialist equipment and laboratories for manufacture and testing and you will be supervised by leading academics in the field. We will also support the development of your future career and give you opportunities to expand your experience and knowledge beyond the topic of the PhD project.  

The studentship is available on a competitive basis for UK and overseas students for 3.5 years. Funding will cover tuition fees as well as providing maintenance at the UKRI doctoral stipend rate. Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2023 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: For UK students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £17,668 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
