About the Project

Klebsiella spp. inhabit multiple niches which attests to its’ wider ecological distribution and genetic and metabolic plasticity, in addition to high rates of antibiotic resistance and virulence. K. variicola, which is a subspecies within the Klebsiella genus, occupies multiple niches ranging from plantendophytism to pathogenic behaviour in plants, humans and animals. Given the emerging relevance of K. variicola in both human and plant health, it is critical we undertake a targeted molecular approach in studying this species. Existing genomic data of Kv population structure do not immediately identify factors which facilitate niche adaptation and infection. Therefore, the overarching goal of this project is to establish in vivo infection models to biologically validate factors which underpin Kv niche adaptive traits and lifestyle.
