Effectiveness of arts-based interventions in multi-cultural environments

Project Description

There is an increasing number of examples of art (visual and auditory) being used to influence behaviours in public spaces, but it is recognised that appreciation and response to art is significantly influenced by national and/or ethnic culture. Checkland’s soft systems methodology (SSM) is an established approach for achieving consensus in action research interventions to complex socio-technical situations. However, it has not previously been reported for predicting the effectiveness of interventions a priori.

Previous work at Loughborough has developed a tool for predicting cultural influences on team performance and this may offer the opportunity for further development in order to understand likely behaviours based on cultural attributes. Combining SSM with Hodgson’s culture-based tool a new methodology for understanding the likely effectiveness of interventional art in multi-cultural public environments will be developed. Such an approach will help planners etc. decide on the appropriateness of an art-based intervention for disaster risk reduction.

Supervision will be from systems engineering and visual art academics; this project will require significant appreciation of multiple and disparate disciplines.
