About the Project

We have built our world out of steel, concrete, and other stiff solids. How well these structures endure depends on the tension and strains they are under, which are closely related to the material’s elastic behaviour. This is why elastic waves, such as vibrations, are an ideal choice to test the stress and strength of materials.

This project will focus on modelling elastic waves (shear, surface, and compressional) in solids, such as steel under stress. For more details see Elastic materials under stress (https://arturgower.github.io/project/initial-stress/) .

The Tribology group will also support this project. The Tribology group use ultrasonic equipment to inspect machine components and rail. This means that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop mathematical models that describe these ultrasonic experiments.
