Electrical and Electronic Engineering: Fully Funded KESS II PhD Scholarship: Advanced Oxides for Next Generation Semiconductor Devices Applied to Renewable Energy Systems / Aerospace / Energy Harvest
This industrially-led PhD studentship on the development of next generation power semiconductor device technology will examine a novel approach based on the ultra-wide bandgap gallium oxide (Ga2O3) material. The student will work alongside a global leader in semiconductor devices and integrated circuits (IC) to bring this latest technological revolution to the marketplace. The student will have the opportunity to work in a world leading industrial microelectronic fabrication facility with sufficient resource to develop the most advanced device geometry; on the nano- or micro-scale. Furthermore, Swansea University’s Centre for Nano-Health cleanroom is available for device fabrication and testing using state of the art equipment. This scholarship represents a full commercial product definition, from research through to manufacture. The Ga2O3 material will first be analysed numerically, via finite element (FE) modelling for its suitability for use as a power semiconductor switching device. Next, rectifiers and transistors will be fabricated in the cleanroom followed by advanced physical and electrical characterisation techniques. Finally, in consultation with our industrial partner, the manufacturability of these novel oxide semiconductors will be explored.
Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their Electrical Engineering or Physics undergraduate degree or a related subject. They should also be eligible for UK/EU Fees.

The studentship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend. The bursary will be limited to a maximum of £14,483 p.a. dependent upon the applicants financial circumstances.
There will also be additional funds available for research expenses.
