About This PhD Project

Currently there is a global interest in the application of 2D materials in electrochemical applications such as energy generation/storage and sensors. A current limitation is the fundamental understanding of this potential electrode material and also its manipulation into useful structures (e.g. as electrodes/sensors/3D porous structures) for electrochemical applications that can be rapidly and reproducibility produced.
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship to extend our groups work on understanding the electrochemistry of 2D materials (graphene, boron-nitride etc) and its application into sensors, batteries and supercapacitors. The next generation 3D printing of 2D materials for electrochemical applications will also be explored.

Specific Requirements of the Project

Candidates must have (or be about to attain) a 1st or 2:1 Honours degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related discipline (with some knowledge about electrochemistry desirable), and be able to demonstrate interest in interdisciplinary projects. Strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential. The postgraduate researcher will be trained in electrochemical methods, related experimental tools, surface science, screen-printing and 3D printing. An important aspect of the project will be collaboration across traditional inter-disciplinary boundaries. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated with a disciplined work ethic and good team-working skills.

Students taking up the award will benefit from transferable skills training, further training opportunities and active participation in professional training events.

Project Aims and Objectives

The main aim of the PHD will be to: i) understanding the electrochemical performance of 2D materials (graphene, h-BN, MoS2 etc); ii) apply these into pertinent areas such as sensors, batteries and so on; iii) develop novel approaches to their fabrication such as screen-printing and 3D printing.
