Electronic textiles for wearable healthcare: investigating the materials and fabrications of the novel electrode on fabric/textiles for healthcare applications

About This PhD Project

Project Description

A three-year fully funded PhD studentship in electronic textiles (E-textiles) for healthcare is available at the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems Research Group (SEMS) group in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). SEMS group is one of the world-leading groups in e-textiles with a long track record of delivering research/innovation projects. The e-textiles team has led a total of £10 million research projects funded EU FP7, EPSRC, MRC, Dstl.

The PhD position is associated with a recent funded EPSRC Innovation Fellowship on “Advanced E-textiles for Wearable Therapeutics”. This PhD project will investigate the materials and fabrications of the novel electrode on fabric/textiles for healthcare applications. The project will require skills on experiment design and implementation. The ideal candidate will have education background on materials, chemistry, textile or relevant subjects; enjoy practical work in a laboratory setting, and be willing to acquire new skills in basic electronics. The PhD student will join an interdisciplinary team, with researchers from electronics, textiles and medical/healthcare. The PhD student will have the opportunities to work with industry partners in manufacturing, textiles, and medical devices.

The ideal candidates should have, or be expected to gain, a first class honours in BSc/BEng, or first or upper second-class degree in MSc/MEng in a related subject. The position will require the ability to work across disciplines, bringing together knowledge relating to e-textiles with electronics and healthcare. Basic knowledge (A-level or equivalent) in Chemistry is essential. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills.

The scholarship is open to UK and EU citizens only due to eligibility restrictions from the funder. Self-funded international students are also welcome to apply for the post but not the scholarship.
