Project Description

This funded PhD studentship involves the on-going development of a numerical code to model spectra and time-dependent signals obtained using a hybrid femto-second/pico-second (fs/ps) rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (R-CARS) near gas/wall interfaces. This studentship will extend the work of a successful PhD from Chemical Physics (U. Edinburgh) who has developed a fs/ps CARS code for high pressure and temperature gases. The focus of the current work will be to develop this code for transient pressure environments and apply fs/ps CARS measurements in a specialized chamber that offers single- and two-wall passages that simulate passages in aero- and automotive engines.

Detailed implementation of the density matrix equations and quantum mechanics will be used in this project. The candidate will work alongside the existing PhD for further modelling development of measurements at high pressures. Once a basic understanding of the model is achieved, the candidate will work alongside a post-doctoral researcher to perform fs/ps R-CARS under well-controlled stationary conditions in a static pressure vessel. Measurements will then be performed in a vessel with a transient pressure rise and decay. The candidate will focus on capturing transient pressure behavior in the CARS model.

Measurements will eventually be conducted in a specialized chamber to probe species along a line (1D) normal to wall surfaces to resolve gas-phase temperatures at gas/wall interfaces. This project is funded by a recently awarded EU project entitled: Energy transfer processes at gas/wall interfaces under extreme conditions(1). The project focuses on measurements that resolve transient boundary layer development and flame-wall quenching at gas/wall interfaces.

The intended start date is September 2019, but earlier start dates are available. The candidates should be EU/UK. The candidate should have a master’s degree in either Physics, Applied Physics, Chemical Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Engineering. Competencies in quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, or optics, even at the empirical level, will be positively considered.

Funding Notes

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree.

Tuition fees and stipend are available for Home/EU students (International students can apply, but the funding only covers the Home/EU fee rate).
