Project Description

PROJECT

WMG, University of Warwick and Autodesk are seeking a candidate to undertake research leading to the award of an International Engineering Doctorate awarded jointly by the Universities of Warwick, Exeter and Cranfield.

As a ‘research engineer’ on our International Doctorate programme you will have unrivalled access to some of the best teaching and industrial expertise in the world, across three universities. While you will be based at WMG and Autodesk, you will also spend time at Cranfield and Exeter Universities to give you the broadest possible experience. You will emerge from the four-year programme more confident and better equipped to make a difference to your company and the global marketplace.

This opportunity also provides a substantial tax free stipend equivalent to many graduate jobs.

The role will involve working on several projects looking at how Artificial Intelligence can help to shape future Smart Manufacturing systems. Working within the Manufacturing Industry Futures Group, the position will involve working with internal research groups to bring their advanced research into applied manufacturing systems.

The Manufacturing Industry Futures group is a mixed discipline group consisting of software engineers, mechanical engineers, design engineers and simulation experts. This unique mix of skills work together to reimagine and realise how manufacturing will change in the future.

The successful candidate will work with manufacturing engineers and customers to understand the problem domain for the work that will be undertaken. They will receive training on Autodesk products as required to understand the current state of the art. Supported by WMG they will then work with the Autodesk research groups to define how AI could be used to enhance or change manufacturing systems and processes. The implementation work will be done in partnership with our largest customers, using them as “lighthouse” examples of the future of making things.

Autodesk have a long history of leading the world of design. Now, through acquisition of leading CAM companies they also have a long history of making things, making them world leaders in the design and manufacture of many different types of components and parts.

As an industry leading company, Autodesk are looking to the future to understand how Artificial Intelligence will change the manufacturing industry. From machine guided engineering processes to automated tooling selection, these are just a couple of the many decisions and processes made and followed every day in manufacturing where AI and ML can help either assist with how things are done, or to help us reimagine new ways of doing things, with autonomous systems.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:

Candidates should have a minimum of an upper second (2.1) honours degree (or equivalent) in computer science including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Attributes:
• High levels of innovative thought and lateral thinking
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software quickly
• Self-motivated, capable of working with minimal guidance and supervision, and within a team.
• Enthusiasm for the subject
Due to funding regulations this project is currently open to Home/EU students only.

THE STUDENTSHIP
Qualifying students receive an attractive enhanced stipend which could be tax and NI free depending on your personal circumstances, paid by the Centre and topped up by a contribution from Autodesk. For 2019 this totals approximately £20,000 tax free per annum.

The funding is for four years and will also cover University tuition fees and all course fees as well as a travel allowance to attend courses.
