About the Project


The application of battery technologies is set to revolutionise many aspects of our lives, from the widespread adoption of electric vehicles to the future electrification of aircraft and stationary energy storage applications.

The aim of this thesis is to explore and evaluate new synthetic routes to cathode materials, with a consideration to both smart design and synthesis. To this end WMG has invested in a laminar flow and powder ALD coating reactors. Ultimately it is hoped to demonstrate the maximum performance of cathode materials. This work will be partially sponsored by Johnson Matthey, hence showing the industrial applicability of the potential outcomes of this work. All materials will be fully characterised, both using standard and advanced techniques, and enhanced battery performance and extend lifetime will be demonstrated in real world format cells.

Essential and desirable criteria

Prospective candidates are expected to have a minimum 2.1 undergraduate (BEng, MEng, BSc, MSci) and/or postgraduate masters’ qualification (MSc) with 65% or above.

Funding Notes

Stipend of £17,109 for 4 years, plus Industrial Top Up of £4,000.
Funding is available to eligible Home fee status and UK domicile EU students.
