Project Description

Project description: Red blood cells (RBCs) are fundamentally important component of human blood due to their unique connection with human health. Blood-related diseases are some of the leading causes of deaths globally. For instance, diabetes affects over 382 million people worldwide and this figure is expected to grow to about 592 million people by 2035. In addition, over 214 million new cases of malaria infection and about half a million deaths were reported in 2014 alone. In normal physiological conditions, RBCs are highly deformable and can easily pass through smaller microcapillaries, however upon infection, they experience impaired deformability, which plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria, vascular complications of diabetes mellitus and advancement of renal failure.

In this project, a novel multiscale computational framework that can precisely capture microlevel changes in RBC microstructure on a continuum scale will be developed to explore the biorheological behaviour of normal RBCs and help to understand the pathorheology of their diseased state. This research project is especially suitable for candidates with a background in engineering and physics. It will also provide the candidate with opportunities to develop transferable skills in computational mechanics, multiscale modelling and biophysics, thereby preparing the candidate for a broad range of possible career paths upon graduation.

Available resources/facilities: Supercomputing facilities with necessary modelling tools and software.

Eligibility
Candidates should hold a first class bachelor’s degree and/or a master’s degree in engineering (civil/mechanical/biomedical), applied mathematics, physics or related subject.

The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend for UK/EU candidates but tuition fees only for international candidates.

Funding Notes

UK/EU candidates: The scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £14,296.

International candidates: The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees only.

There will be additional funds available for research expenses.
