About This PhD Project

Project Description

Supervisor: Professor Peter Kazansky

Project description

High-power ultrafast lasers enable the new technique of direct optical writing for patterning waveguides, micro- and nano-structures in three dimensions, to provide entirely new functionalities in optoelectronics. Three-dimensional photonic structures will allow significant increases in the scale of integration in optical information processing and data storage opening new avenues in the fields of photonics and information technology which includes recent demonstration of 5D data storage.

This project investigates interaction between intense ultra-short light pulses and matter at or below the wavelength scale reaching states of matter found only deep in the cores of the Earth and other planets. A key goal is to exploit these extreme conditions of ultrafast laser writing for synthesising unique material phases with on-demand optical and electronic properties.

This project explores a variety of advanced ultrafast laser material processing techniques, the physics of femtosecond photosensitivity and applications of 3D photonic structures.
This project is supported EU and Microsoft and available for international students.
