Applications are open for a funded PhD studentship addressing the broad theme of modern history, with a particular emphasis on energy, technology and the environment.
Potential candidates for the studentship are invited to submit research proposals of approximately 1,000 words on topics in modern history. One fully funded PhD studentship is available for a successful candidate. This includes payment of UK-level doctoral fees and a maintenance stipend. Applicants must meet the funding criteria set out by the Northern Ireland Department for Economy, including a three-year residency in the UK prior to starting the PhD programme. The studentship is intended for a project on modern history (1800–present). We are particularly interested in projects on topics related to energy, natural resources, technology and the environment, but these are indicative – not exclusive – areas of research. Projects on other areas of economic, environmental, social, business and political history may be considered in consultation with the scheme’s nominated supervisor (see below).
- Potential candidates may: a) propose their original research proposal, b) develop a research proposal under the guidance of the prospective supervisor or c) combine a and b.
- We are open to diverse approaches and methodologies, and there is no limitation on the proposal’s geographical scope. However, projects need to be feasible, in terms of access to primary sources and supervisory expertise.
In the proposal, the primary sources and methodology should be clearly articulated, and the proposed project needs to be located within the existing secondary literature on the subject.
This project will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Hiroki Shin (primary supervisor) and appropriate second supervisor in Queen’s University Belfast.
