The overall goal is to provide simulation and design tools, which will enable industry to design and manufacture composite components from textile preforms more efficiently. The project will focus on double-diaphragm forming of dry non-crimp fabrics (NCFs), guided by the priorities of our industrial partners. The aim of the project is to develop experimental and analytical tools to predict wrinkle formation in NCF components and incorporate that into a design methodology. Engagement from a range of industrial partners, with appropriate case study designs, will inform the project so that the outcomes can be effectively translated to effective tools.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related subject. A good knowledge and experience of mechanics and materials is required.
The EPSRC DTP studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for eligible UK students. EU and international students may be considered for a small number of awards at the UK rate.
