About the Project

As society transitions to renewable and often variable power sources and drives towards decarbonizing the energy economy, energy storage will play an increasingly important role. Designing and optimizing energy storage devices and their materials will be one of the most important innovations to accomplish over the next thirty years.

The next generation of Li ion batteries will contain Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide materials (NMC) as the cathode to increase the energy density of the batteries to 4.3V. However, this type of material is extremely air sensitive to moisture and carbon dioxide. This project will investigate the use of interfacial additives and milling techniques to control various aspects of particle size, morphology, encapsulation, rheology and dispersion stability of the cathode materials in a simple formulation of Li ion cathode coatings and the microstructure/property relationship and adhesion of the dried electrode material coating to the current collector with the electrochemical performance of the final Li ion battery.
