About the Project

About the position: We are seeking full-time highly motivated PhD candidate to perform cutting-edge antimicrobial research commencing in 2022. Domestic and international students are invited to apply. The scholarship aligns with a recently funded Australia Research Council Discovery Grant: Eradicating bacterial biofilms with nitroxide-antimicrobial hybrids. Students will be supervised by A/Prof. Makrina Totsika and Prof. Kathryn Fairfull-Smith.

About the project: The adhesion of bacteria to surfaces and their subsequent ability to aggregate into colonies called biofilms is a significant problem in healthcare systems around the world. Bacterial biofilms cause the majority of persistent and chronic infections, including those associated with medical implants and diseases such as cystic fibrosis. As biofilms display an inherent resistance to antimicrobial agents, there is a strong need to design new agents which eliminate bacterial colonisation and prevent subsequent biofilm formation. This project focuses on testing new antimicrobial agents against biofilm-forming clinical bacteria (e.g. MRSA, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) in vitro and in vivo and investigating their mode of action. This PhD position will involve molecular and cellular microbiology, as well as laboratory and animal testing of new anti-biofilm agents. This position would suit candidates with a background in bacteriology and cellular microbiology.

About the scholarship: You will receive a scholarship, indexed annually ($28,854 in 2022) for up to 3 years (PhD students). Students must meet the QUT eligibility requirements to be considered for this scholarship (QUTPRA). See: QUT - QUT Postgraduate Research Award (QUTPRA) (International)
