Prof Peter Merriman, Dr Elizabeth Gagen  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

The studentship is funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the ESRC Wales DTP

Despite the huge expansion of research on mobility practices, inequalities and infrastructures over the past twenty years, only a small proportion of this work has focussed on the ‘formation’, education and governance of mobile subjects. With significant changes in both UK and Welsh government transport policy over the past year – including the adoption of 20mph urban speed limits in Wales, and the incorporation of a new ‘road user hierarchy’ into the Highway Code – there is an urgent need to understand the changing expectations and experiences of different road users under these new rules, and to assess different techniques for translating these rules through educational strategies.

This project will involve research with the Wales Road Casualty Reduction Partnership (Go Safe) and their partners in local authorities and the police to study the effectiveness of different road safety initiatives and education programmes in shaping the habits and conduct of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in Wales. The student will critically engage with academic debates on mobility, transport, governance, education and citizenship which cut across a range of disciplines to examine how different road safety education programmes influence the conduct of individual road users in both urban and rural areas in Wales.
