About the Project

Although artificial evolution has been considered for the optimisation of diverse problems for many years, its application to real-world designs almost always demands a multi-optimisation approach. To enable a true evolutionary loop, new algorithms and mechanisms will have to be created, feeding performance measures back from the final product. Potentially even more interesting and valuable, is using artificial evolution for design in combination with artificial development processes (the growth of a single entity during its own lifetime). When applying artificial evolution to design problems there are a number of issues that need consideration. The mapping between genotype and phenotype (the final form) is usually more complex and less intuitive than with optimisation problems. This is the focus of this exciting research project.

Entry requirements:

Candidates should have (or expect to obtain) a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2.1) or equivalent in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a closely related subject.

This is a self-funded project and you will need to have sufficient funds in place (eg from scholarships, personal funds and/or other sources) to cover the tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of the research degree programme.
