Project Description

Sexual selection is underpinned by variation in reproductive success. Our research group studies the mechanisms underpinning this variation, primarily using birds as a model. We aim to elucidate the genetic and developmental basis of reproductive failure, establish how it is maintained across populations despite strong selection for reproductive success, and understand how male and female reproductive traits interact both with each other, and with external environmental pressures. We use a combination of approaches to answer these questions, including laboratory experiments, long-term field studies, quantitative genetics, and bio-imaging, and we have strong interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in conservation, biophysics, and medical imaging. Our work provides insight into the evolution of reproductive traits, with important implications for animal conservation and fertility research.
