About the Project

Project details

The developmental potential of physical education (PE) has been widely lauded in recent years, with much being claimed about the opportunities that it might afford young people. These various claims relate largely to the capacity of PE to enhance learning across the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains. Whilst such assertions are not unfounded, they are perhaps more firmly supported in certain domains. Indeed, it has been argued that research focusing on the capacity of PE to support pupils’ social and emotional learning (SEL) remains somewhat underdeveloped and that more work is needed on how PE conceptualises and approaches learning and teaching around/through SEL (Hooper et al., 2020).

The purpose of this project therefore is to examine the potential of PE for promoting pupils’ social and emotional learning. Building on the supervisors’ previous work in this area, the aims of this project are threefold. Firstly, it will look to review recent literature relating to SEL in PE and identify key issues and considerations. Secondly, it will employ participatory methods in case study schools to examine the place, purpose and practice of SEL in PE from various participant perspectives (including pupils, PE teachers and senior leadership teams). Finally, drawing on the data generated, it will look to identify implications for and make recommendations around future policy and practice in PE, with potential to contribute to discussions around Quality PE.
