Project Description

Research has identified positive relationships between contemporary coaching practices and desirable outcomes for athletes. In particular, a recent review highlights the impact of game-based practice on enjoyment and subsequent adherence to physical activity over the life course. In addition, links have been established to positive youth development outcomes related to social competence, compassion and emotion regulation.
Predominantly, research investigating the impact of coaching practice on influential factors in youth sport has been conducted within popular team sports (e.g., football). Little is known about the utility of contemporary coaching practice philosophies in other sports (e.g. net/wall games, individual/dual sports, target games, and non-game sports). Non-traditional physical activities are more frequently participated in than many mainstream sports; understanding how coaches can most effectively contribute to long-term psychosocial health-related outcomes in these contexts is essential to addressing issues such as obesity and diabetes.
Through the use of innovative methods and focusing on practical implications, the planned programme of studies will engage athletes, coaches, national governing bodies and international federations as well as community and governmental organisations involved in health promotion.

Funding Notes

This studentship is only open to self-funding candidates. Self-funding candidates are expected to pay University fees and to provide their own living costs. In addition, a ‘bench fee’ will have to be paid to cover project running costs (at a level that will be determined specifically for each project).
