Exploration of models/systems of longer-term care for stroke survivors with aphasia.

In stroke, our research is focused on enhancing rehabilitation and improving the longer-term outcomes for stroke survivors and their carers. This includes: a review of information provision; a randomised trial evaluation of a structured review of patients six months after stroke; development of a tool to assess unmet need after stroke and most recently development and feasibility testing of a supportive self-management intervention delivered six months after stroke. The Unit has a long-established track record in randomised trials and working closely with the University of Leeds Clinical Trials Research Unit delivered two of the world’s largest stroke rehabilitation trials.

The NHS Long-term Plan and the emerging stroke plan provides an exciting context for work in this area.

Within the context of this ongoing programme of work and supportive network of colleagues applicants are invited to apply for a PhD Scholarship in the area of "Exploration of models/systems of longer-term care for Stroke survivors with aphasia". This may include, for example, the idea of ’aphasia centres’. Exploring what aphasia centres around the world offer and recommendations for best practice. This scholarship may be of particular interest to those with a background in Speech and Language Therapy.

For both topic areas mixed-methodology would be employed, providing the successful applicant with a firm foundation to progress a successful career in applied health research.

Environment:
The Academic Unit of Elderly Care and Rehabilitation, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, University of Leeds (http://medhealth.leeds.ac.uk/info/646/academic_unit_of_elderly_care_and_rehabilitation) has a large portfolio of clinically relevant research. The importance of the work and its alignment with national priorities is reflected in our grant income which is approximately £12 million. There are approximately 45 staff, based in Bradford Institute for Health Research, within Bradford Royal Infirmary. The research programmes are supported by national and international colleagues.

The successful candidate will have a main base in the Academic Unit of Elderly Care and Rehabilitation, Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Eligibility:
You should hold a first degree equivalent to at least a UK upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject area. The scholarship will be awarded to the strongest candidate by merit.

The Faculty minimum requirements for candidates whose first language is not English are:
• British Council IELTS – score of 6.5 overall, with no element less than 6.0
• TOEFL iBT – overall score of 92 with the listening and reading element no less than 21, writing element no less than 22 and the speaking element no less than 23.
