About the Project

There is a growing demand for radioactive isotopes to be employed both in treatment and diagnostics. Suitable isotopes need to be producable in sufficiently large quantities and at affordable price. Nowadays we produce most of the isotopes either on reactors or on proton accelerators, which can neither meet the demand of quantity nor affordability.

A major leap in laser technology in the last decade promises cheap table-top photon beams which can be used for both treatment and isotope production. Within this project we will explore the possibility of producing various medical isotopes with intense photon beams as well as explore possibilities of multiple secondary beam radiation treatments using intense photon beams as a booster. A project involves a lot of hardware construction as well as simulation and data analysis. Test runs will be conducted at Mainz MAMI accelerator and at laser accelerator facilities.
