Theme: Health and Care Across the Life Course (HaCaL)

Lay Summary: Good oral health is vitally important to both physical and emotional well-being. People with poor oral health may experience pain, difficulty talking and eating, feelings of reduced dignity, and social isolation. They may also be at greater risk of developing medical conditions that can ultimately increase their risk of death. Early intervention in oral care is recommended to reduce oral health inequalities and hospital admissions. However, it is recognised that people living in care homes have limited access to dental services.

Given the national priority to improve the standard of daily mouth care, it is vital to explore the role of oral health care for older people in care homes.

This thesis will explore oral health and oral care in care homes with the aim of understanding approaches to how oral care outcomes might be improved. Such research would contribute to the overall discourse in reducing the impact of health inequalities in care homes settings.
