About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD candidate to join the Department of Engineering at Manchester Met University. The overarching goal is to test the use of wastewaters and/or anaerobic digestates as water replacement in concrete making.

The PhD student is required to carry out essential experimental work, produce high quality research outputs and get involved in dissemination activities at selected events. The successful candidate will be based at the Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering (AMSE) Research Centre and various labs located in the John Dalton Tower building, which are fully equipped with anaerobic digestion facilities, analytical devices for testing and characterisation (HPLC, ICP, SEM, TEM, FTIR and EDX). Additionally, short periods for testing standard concrete structures against a variety of EN BS classes will be conducted at the industry partner site (based in Greater Manchester), whilst some of the work involving making and testing of concrete will be conducted at Leeds Beckett University. This project advances the knowledge of greener concrete performance from wastewaters as the water substitute which will play a fundamental role in providing a circular solution to the construction sector, which AMSE is committed to further develop.

Fully-funded PhD (home fees), stipend paid at UKRI rate (2022/23 rate £16,062). Expected start date October 2022.
