About the Project

Working closely with industry partners, this project is concerned with advancing statistical and machine learning techniques in the analysis of longitudinal discrete choice data.

The decision-making process that people undergo is naturally complex, involving a wide variety of factors, many of which are interacting, and each of which affect a person’s final decision. To fully appreciate the intricacies of this process, discrete choice models can be utilised, analysing a wide range of scenarios, such as consumer research, healthcare planning accounting for patients’ quality of life, transport modelling to develop smarter cities, etc.

Despite the growing demand for discrete choice modelling, only a small selection of studies to date have investigated such approaches in a longitudinal context, and thus ignore the realistic scenario that peoples’ opinions develop and change as time progresses. In addition, current approaches typically assume that people with the same characteristics behave consistently, ignoring the presence of outlying individuals and thus not accounting properly for their differing opinions. This project will tackle the intersection of these issues, advancing current approaches in the development of robust longitudinal discrete choice models.

The proposed project has been designed in close consultation with an industrial partner, providing the successful candidate the unique opportunity to engage in live client projects relevant to their research in which they may test and enhance the statistical models they develop. The PhD researcher will complete their studies in the university setting whilst benefiting from both academic and industrial supervision and mentorship.

Funder information:

This is a DfE (CAST) funded studentship. As the project is in partnership with CARD Group Ltd, the successful candidate will receive an increased stipend of £4,000 on average per annum on top of the standard DfE stipend.

Eligibility for a full DfE studentship requires you to have been resident in the United Kingdom for a three-year period before the first day of the first academic year of the course. Details on the eligibility criteria for a DfE studentship can be found here:
