Exploring the effects of irrational beliefs on athlete well-being

Project Description

A humanistic cognitive-behavioural approach which is receiving growing attention in sport psychology literature is that of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT; Ellis, 1957). REBT posits that it is not events which directly cause emotions and behaviours, but it is one’s beliefs about events that lead to emotional and behavioural reactivity. Accordingly, REBT distinguishes itself from other cognitive behavioural approaches by placing irrational and rational beliefs at its core. Irrational beliefs comprise a primary belief (demandingness) and three secondary beliefs (awfulizing, low frustration tolerance, and self/other downing).

Extensive research has outlined robust positive relationships between irrational beliefs and dysfunctional emotions (including general distress, depression, anger, anxiety and guilt). However, scant research to date has explored the effects of irrational beliefs on athlete well-being. This exciting programme of research seeks to determine the effects of irrational beliefs on athlete well-being and will involve the preliminary development and testing of REBT-based interventions to enhance athlete wellbeing.
