About the Project

The Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research (VFI) are delighted to offer a fully funded PhD scholarship. The project will explore the use of photo-elicitation interviewing (PEI) to understand the experiences of young people within military families during periods of mobility i.e. where, for operations reasons, Service Personnel are required to move and their families follow them.

There is a significant gap in the literature and research that describes the experiences of teenagers during this process. Moving school, making new friends, becoming comfortable with new environments etc. are a struggle at the best of times. The tempo of mobility often means that these transitional moves are frequent and can involve overseas postings.

To undertake the work the candidate will need to gain the trust of young people from the military community. Therefore, the successful applicant will understand the UK Armed Forces community and ideally will have experience working with military children.

We would like the successful applicant to use PEI as a mechanism to stimulate more in-depth and personally resonant narratives from the young people who participate in the research. Whilst there is not an expectation that the successful applicant will have used PEI, they need to have a strong, and demonstrable aptitude to applied qualitative social research.

The PhD will be based within the VFI and will be supervised by Prof Matt Fossey, Director of the VFI and Professor of Public Services Research, Dr Hilary Engward, Associate Professor of Applied Social Research (VFI) and Dr Julia Johnson, Co-Course Leader and Senior Lecturer, BA (Hons) Photography (Cambridge School of Art).
