Fabrication of electromechanically active electrodes for miniaturised electrochemical devices

Project Description

Self-funded students are welcome to apply for a PhD in the fabrication of electromechanically active materials for potential use in miniaturized electrochemical devices.

Over the last decades, miniaturization of chemical processes, including those involving electrochemical reactions, has emerged as a promising approach to process intensification by modifying conditions within chemical reactors. However, the laminar nature of the flow in such devices remains a challenge for electrochemical applications as transport of reactants primarily takes place by convection and diffusion. Any improvements in mass transport would therefore have a significant effect in the efficiency and performance of such devices. A potential option to improve mass transport in miniaturized electrochemical devices is the use of electromechanically active electrodes.

The present project will explore the fabrication of electromechanically active electrodes by electrospinning of thin fibers mainly consisting of BZT-BCT, a novel Pb-free piezoelectric ceramic with promising prospects of replacing Pb-based PZT transducers widely used for sensor and actuator applications. This project will investigate the synthesis and properties of electrospun BZT-BCT with a focus on the effect of the synthesis parameters on the characteristics of the material and its suitability for the fabrication of electromechanically active electrodes. The feasibility of electromechanically active BZT-BCT-based electrodes for different miniaturized electrochemical applications will also be investigated.
