Faraday Institution Studentship - Engineering cathode particle (in)homogeneity through Secondary Electron Hyperspectral Imaging


Project Description

Do you want to play a part in ensuring lithium ion battery performance matches electric vehicle needs by exploiting new cathode chemistries? You can do so by working on the fundamental understanding of structure and particle homogeneity in order to fully establish conditions for best performing materials.
To succeed in this ambitious project, you will apply scanning electron microscopy based techniques such as Secondary Electron Hyperspectral Imaging (SEHI) in combination with machine learning techniques to evaluate new cathode particles emerging from the synthetic teams on the Faraday Institution FutureCat project. Therefore, the successful applicant will be embedded in a multidisciplinary research group of chemists, physicists and engineers and jointly supervised by Dr Rodenburg (Department of Materials Science & Engineering) and Prof. Serena Corr (Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) and benefit from some unique and world-leading equipment and facilities at the University of Sheffield.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) at least the equivalent of a 2.1 honours masters level degree in a relevant subject (e.g. engineering discipline, physics, (electro-)chemistry or equivalent). Experience with research, batteries, scanning electron microscopy and machine learning is desirable.

Funding Notes

The Faraday Institution Cluster PhD researchers receive an enhanced stipend over and above the standard EPSRC offer. The total annual stipend is approximately £20,000 plus an additional £7,000 annually to cover training and travel costs.

To be eligible, you must be ordinarily resident in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship. If you are from a EU country other than the UK you are only eligible for a fees-only award.
