The concept of using FRP composites for structurally integrated stay-in-place (SIP) formwork for structural concrete elements maximizes the advantages of both FRP and concrete; not only can the high strength of FRP be utilized effectively, but also FRP profiles can serve as permanent formwork. This system combines the advantages of rapid construction with the inherent durability of FRP composites, enabling economical and safer installations, superior durability in particular to atmospheric degradation, leading to reduced maintenance cost.
Furthermore, the bottom FSIP eliminates the need for the installation of primary bottom reinforcement. The installation of FSIP form systems is different from the construction of conventional reinforced concrete elements. The proposed project will investigate the feasibility of using FRP-SIP form in structural concrete elements, for example slabs or beams. Key aspects to be studied are optimisation of the shape of FRP SIP, most appropriate method of achieving bond between concrete and FRP SIP as well as other elements in the structures, for example beams or columns.
