Financial regulation and firm innovation - documenting the channel of how financial regulation may influence firm innovation.

Project Description

Firm innovation has gained popularity in academic research over the recent years. One of the main arguments is that firm innovation generates firm value. There is substantial literature which attempt to examine the determinants of firm innovation.

In this call I invite PhD candidates who have strong background of banking and finance to submit a research proposal to document the channel of how financial regulation may influence firm innovation. Financial regulation across the world has become more stringent since the Great Recession, as evidenced by the BASEL III regulation. The tightened financial regulation will influence the lending to the real economy and hence will have significant implications on firm’s financial constraint.

The research proposal should clearly identify the economic channel of how this change will influence the incentives for firms to engage in innovative activities. I shall also expect a clear identification of the data sources and methodology to conduct this research.

The proposal should also identify whether the impact of financial regulation on firm innovation is causal, and how this causal impact can be verified using unique data sources and advanced econometric methods.

The candidate should have a strong academic record of Merit/Distinction from a recognized institution. Some past research and working experience in the relevant area is preferred.
