Different chemicals such as surfactants and polymers are used in the oil and gas sector (e.g., in oil recovery) and also during CO2 storage projects (CCUS). In this research project the aim is to investigate the application of new fluids during CCUS in subsurface porous media. This project has two phases: experimental and modelling, therefore, to understand and model the flow of these fluids around the well bore and inside the porous media their rheological properties will be investigated. In addition, their interactions with rock, wellbore cement, and with CO2 (for CCUS projects) will be characterised. The outcomes of the project will give new insights to the fluid properties and their interactions with CO2 during CCUS projects. Using the new fluids, it is expected that wellbore integrity issues will be minimised.
The experiments will be carried out using equipment facilities available in the School of Engineering.
Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. The successful candidate should have, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or any other closely related areas.
