About the Project
This highly interdisciplinary collaboration is focused on sensing and imaging for improved clinical care with researchers from the fields of optical fibres, detectors, fluorescent probes, biological models, signal processing and machine learning. Based on the initial research developments testing in patients has commenced of a number of world-leading bedside-based technology platforms to diagnose disease inside the lung. This project is to help develop the next generation of instruments suitable for longer term use in the clinic.
This Optical Sensing and Imaging Platform is providing ground-breaking dynamic sensing of pathological events in the distal lung of patients at the molecular level, which leads to significant healthcare improvement through rapid diagnosis, patient stratification and personalised drug therapy. The platform consists of both optical fibre-bundle and bench-top microscopy imaging systems, and time-resolved fluorescence/Raman spectroscopy systems.
The PhD project is focused on taking our most recent detector, the world’s first distal chip-on-tip camera capable of fluorescence lifetime imaging based on state of the art stacked 3D CMOS single photon detectors, and looking to integrate this with miniature optics, spectroscopy systems and advanced control software. We expect this technology will improve the specificity of identifying disease states over today’s intensity-based microendoscopy cameras and now seek to recruit a high-calibre postgraduate student to take this technology from board level prototype to optic fiber mounted microendoscopy imaging system towards in-vivo trials. The student will gain experience in applications of novel SPAD detectors, miniature optics and fibre integration, working with chemists, biologists and clinicians as well as software and data analysis.
You will join a team in Engineering and Clinical Sciences at University of Edinburgh’s and work in close collaboration with optical physicists in the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation at Durham University (Prof John Girkin) with opportunities for exchange visits between the sites. This project would suit students with a background in physics or engineering with strong practical skills in optics, mechanics or signal/image processing, an interest in software, chemical biology and bio-photonics would be an advantage and experience in multidisciplinary research would also be beneficial. The students will be supervised by Prof. Robert Henderson and Dr. Neil Finlayson.
